I today bravely installed Windows 8 Pro on my older Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (model PP195) netbook. The readiness check at the outset of the installation revealed no hardware related issues. The process itself generated no errors and the operating system appears to run. Despite this, the computer no longer displays its native resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels but rather a constrained set of two options, specifically either 800 x 576 pixels or 640 x 480 pixels. This has two untoward effects:

1. Metro mode does nor run properly as 'apps' require the device's full resolution which is unavailable due I strongly suspect to a video driver issue. The video controller is an Intel LPIA Poulsbo. The driver employed by Windows 8 is not from Intel as it was before but a generic one from Microsoft.

2. In desktop mode, things run alright but the aspect ratio is somewhat distorted which I find annoying.

Checks of the support websites of Dell, Intel and Microsoft brought forth no solutions. Intel has a Windows 7 driver that might work or not (an unhelpful result were that to occur). While I used this approach successfully for my multi-function printer/ scanner, the risk was much less.

I found a possible answer on a blog. This entailed reconfiguring the second logical display (this is supported by the Intel controller) and making this the default. In my case, it is unclear how this might now be done as the newly employed generic Microsoft driver looks like it supports but one logical display. Intel has some web-based driver problem-solving tools but these use Java which is indifferently supported (in fact, not all when in Metro mode) under Windows 8 owing to Microsoft's increasingly Apple-like rejection of third-party helper applications, at least ones not sanctioned via the new Windows 8 Microsoft Store.

Any help would be much appreciated.
